Serving Pinellas Park
Allergy & Asthma Care for Pinellas Park
West on Park Boulevard to Seminole Boulevard and you are here. Specialist testing and treatment for the inland side of the county, where the air does not get rinsed by a Gulf breeze.
Inland air is not the same air
Pinellas Park sits in the middle of the peninsula rather than on it. There is no steady onshore breeze pushing pollen back inland and no salt air diluting anything. Between US-19, 49th Street, the Gateway commercial corridor and the rail line, this is the working half of the county — and the exposures here look more like a workplace and a yard than a beach.
That changes the symptom pattern. Instead of a two-week misery when something blooms, inland patients often describe a low, constant background: congestion that never clears, eyes that itch by mid-afternoon, a cough that shows up on the drive home. Add a humid Gulf climate that keeps mold and dust mites active all twelve months, and there is rarely a natural break in which to feel better.
None of that has to be permanent. Nasal allergy is an immune system response to something specific — dust, dust mites, pet dander, tree pollen, or mold. Once we know which, it becomes a treatable condition rather than a personality trait.
When the trigger is at work
Occupational asthma is one of the asthma types Sher Allergy Specialists identifies and treats, and it is under-recognized because the pattern is easy to miss from the inside. If your chest is better on vacation and worse by Wednesday, that is data.
Contact skin allergy follows the same logic. Got rash? A new glove, a new cleaner, a new cosmetic, a metal, a fragrance — an allergic reaction is very different from an occasional skin irritation, and skin allergies carry the risk of future and more severe reactions. Patch testing exists precisely to find the culprit instead of rotating creams for a year.
Symptoms that track your shift
Better on days off, worse on the third day back, worst in one specific area of the building. Bring that timeline to the visit — it often does more diagnostic work than any single test.
Spirometry
Lung function testing that measures how much air your lungs hold and how quickly you can move it, and can be repeated after medication to see whether treatment is working.
FeNO
A simple breath test that determines the amount of lung inflammation, identifying activity for asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis.
Patch Testing
Applied skin testing for contact allergens — metals, fragrances, cosmetics and other materials that produce rash on repeated exposure.
Testing that respects your time and your money
Our allergy testing and treatment services are evidence-based and selected according to each patient’s clinical history. Allergy skin testing gives maximum information with minimum discomfort and risk, and the optimal number of tests is applied for effective diagnosis and treatment decisions — not every test that exists. At Sher Allergy Specialists, your allergy skin tests are personally measured and read by a physician or physician assistant, with physician oversight and interpretation, rather than simply recorded by a technician or medical assistant for later review.
The Sher Allergy team is dedicated to getting your allergy problems right from the start, avoiding wasted time and money and the risky side effects of unnecessary tests and treatments. When blood testing is appropriate we order the most advanced allergy and immunologic blood testing, which also helps patients avoid expensive and unproven testing with minimal value.
We aim to complete testing and interpretation on the same day as your evaluation whenever possible, so you leave with a diagnosis and treatment steps rather than a follow-up appointment to hear results.
A board-certified specialist, minutes from Park Boulevard
A board-certified Allergist/Immunologist is on site for every visit at Sher Allergy Specialists. Experience matters: allergic conditions are immune system disorders, and a board-certified Allergist/Immunologist is specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage allergies, asthma and other immune system disorders.
Dr. Mandel R. Sher is board certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology and the American Board of Pediatrics and serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He has been named “Best Allergy and Immunology Specialist in Pinellas County” — and the office is a ten-minute drive from Freedom Lake Park.
Dr. Johana Castro Wagner, Allergist/Immunologist, earned her medical degree at Universidad Central De Venezuela, completed her residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Texas, and trained under Dr. Sher in her fellowship at the University of South Florida Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Division of Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She leads the Sher Allergy Oral Immunotherapy Clinic for Food including Peanut Allergy and is fluent in Spanish and English.
Treatment, once we know the cause
Allergy shots have been the hallmark allergy treatment for a wide variety of allergies for over a century. They are made from carefully prepared allergen extracts, and reduce allergy symptoms in over 85% of patients. They are a uniquely powerful allergy therapy, working gradually on the allergic and asthmatic process itself rather than masking symptoms, resulting in decreased symptoms and medication needs, and they may prevent progression to more severe allergic problems.
Shots are given by scheduled appointment with our dedicated allergy shot nurse — and scheduled appointments are exactly what makes them survivable for someone working a fixed shift. Other paths include the oral immunotherapy pill for grass, ragweed or dust mite allergy, biologic therapy for disease that has not responded to traditional treatment, and medical, lifestyle and environmental management aimed at the triggers themselves.
Questions from Pinellas Park patients
How do I know whether my asthma is work-related?
The pattern is the clue: symptoms that improve on days off and return within a day or two of going back, or that concentrate in one part of a building or one task. Occupational asthma is one of the asthma types we identify and treat. Bring a rough timeline of your week to the visit.
I have had this rash for months and creams are not fixing it. What now?
A rash that keeps returning after new cosmetics, jewelry, gloves or cleaning products may be an allergic reaction rather than a simple irritation, and those carry a risk of more severe reactions over time. Patch testing identifies contact allergens directly. We also diagnose and treat itching, swelling, hives and mastocytosis.
Why do I feel worse here than I did on the coast?
Inland Pinellas gets less air movement and no coastal dilution, so pollen and outdoor mold sit where they land. Combine that with year-round indoor dust mite and mold exposure in a humid climate and there is no natural off-season. Testing tells us which of those is actually driving your symptoms.
Is allergy shot treatment realistic if I work full time?
Yes, because the shots are scheduled appointments rather than a walk-in line, with hours Monday through Thursday including a Tuesday afternoon and evening block and an early Thursday start. They can also be rescheduled when a week goes sideways.
