727-397-8557 New and established patients welcome

Your allergist is already in the neighborhood

Sher Allergy Specialists sits at 11200 Seminole Boulevard, Suite 310, in the Largo Professional Center. If you live in Largo, you already drive past us. We are on the Seminole Boulevard stretch of Alternate US-19 between Ulmerton Road and Walsingham Road, a few blocks from Largo Mall and a straight shot from East Bay Drive, West Bay Drive and Belleair Road.

That matters more than it sounds. Allergy care is not usually one dramatic visit — it is an evaluation, testing, a treatment plan, and then follow-through. When the office is ten minutes from your kitchen table, follow-through actually happens. Parents make the after-school appointment. Adults keep the shot schedule. Nobody quits a treatment plan because of traffic on US-19.

The office has ample parking and Wi-Fi, and we are set up so that a full range of services happens under one roof rather than sending you across the county for testing.

What Largo neighbors come to us for

Sher Allergy Specialists provides comprehensive pediatric and adult allergy, asthma, and immune system-related diagnosis and care for common, rare, and mystifying conditions. Some of what we see most often in Largo:

  • Nasal and environmental allergy — allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic headaches, mold and fungus allergy, pet allergy, snoring, and non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis
  • Asthma — allergic, cough variant, eosinophilic, exercise-induced and occupational asthma
  • Sinusitis — including nasal polyps and recurrent or chronic infection, plus the front headache and tooth pain that come with sinuses that will not drain
  • Dust allergy — dust mites are microscopic, highly allergenic, and they love the heat and humidity of Florida, which is why they live year round in Largo mattresses, carpets and upholstered furniture
  • Food allergy, eczema, hives, drug allergy and stinging insect allergy

A board-certified allergist is on site for your visit

Allergic conditions are immune system disorders, and a board-certified Allergist/Immunologist is specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage them. At Sher Allergy Specialists a board-certified Allergist/Immunologist is on site for every visit — you are not handed off.

Dr. Mandel R. Sher founded the practice here in Largo. He is board certified by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology and the American Board of Pediatrics, trained at Northwestern, Duke, Boston Children’s Hospital and the University of Michigan, and serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He has been honored by patients and peers with awards including “Best Doctor in America” and “Best Allergy and Immunology Specialist in Pinellas County.”

Dr. Johana Castro Wagner is also double board certified, has a special interest in food allergies, eczema, hives, and pediatric allergy and asthma, and leads the Sher Allergy Oral Immunotherapy Clinic for peanut allergy.

Testing and answers, usually in the same visit

The initial evaluation visit is structured to be a productive launch into allergy action steps. We listen to your allergy story, review your medical history, examine you, and strive to do allergy testing and interpretation on the same day when possible. The goal is that you leave with a diagnosis and treatment steps — not a second appointment just to hear results.

Allergy Skin Testing

Scratch/prick, intradermal and patch testing. Essentially painless, administered quickly, and usually completed during the initial visit. We are happy to demonstrate the testing on parents whose young children are being tested. At Sher Allergy Specialists, your allergy skin tests are personally measured and read by a physician or physician assistant, with physician oversight and interpretation, rather than simply recorded by a technician or medical assistant for later review.

Blood Testing

The most advanced allergy and immunologic blood testing, including celiac disease, food components (milk, peanut, tree nuts and egg), mast cell disorders (allergic cell hypersensitivity) and alpha-gal (meat allergy) — which helps patients avoid expensive, unproven tests.

Spirometry

Lung function testing that measures how much air your lungs hold and how quickly you move it, and can be repeated after medication to measure progress.

FeNO (Nitric Oxide)

A simple breath test that measures lung inflammation, identifying activity for asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis.

Oral Food Challenge

A very accurate and safe diagnostic test for food allergy, performed under the supervision of a board-certified Allergist.

Rhinoscopy

A flexible fiberoptic look at the nasal passages, back of the throat and larynx (voice box) — very helpful for persistent cough, sinusitis, chronic postnasal drip, and finding blockages such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps.

Treatment that fits a Largo schedule

Allergy shots (allergy immunotherapy) are all-natural rather than medication, and are a uniquely powerful allergy therapy, working gradually on the allergic and asthmatic process itself rather than masking symptoms. At Sher Allergy Specialists they are given by scheduled appointment with our dedicated allergy shot nurse, and appointments can easily be rescheduled around a busy week.

Not everyone needs shots. Depending on what your testing shows, your plan may use the oral immunotherapy pill for grass, ragweed or dust mite allergy; oral immunotherapy for food allergy; biologic therapy such as Xolair, Dupixent, Nucala or Fasenra for conditions that have not responded to traditional treatment, including Xolair for food allergies; or a combination of medical, lifestyle and environmental management aimed at the triggers in your own home.

Telemedicine appointments are available for visits that do not require testing — useful when a Largo workday will not bend. Call our friendly office team to schedule either way.

Questions we hear from Largo patients

Where exactly is the Largo office?

Largo Professional Center, 11200 Seminole Blvd #310, Largo, FL 33778 — on Seminole Boulevard (Alternate US-19) between Ulmerton Road and Walsingham Road. There is ample parking on site.

Can I be tested at my first appointment?

Usually, yes. We strive to perform allergy testing and interpret it on the same day as your evaluation visit when possible. Because certain medications interfere with skin testing, ask our reception team for the Allergy Testing Dos and Don’ts when you schedule so nothing has to be repeated.

Do you see children as well as adults?

Yes. Our Allergists are trained and board certified in Pediatrics as well as Allergy and Immunology, so a child can grow up in this practice and continue to be managed here as an adult. Allergy and immune testing can be accurately performed even in the first months of life.

I have been to other doctors already and still have no answer. Is that worth an allergy visit?

It is exactly the kind of visit we are built for. We evaluate common, rare and mystifying conditions, and an allergic or immune system evaluation is often the right next step when other efforts at diagnosis and treatment have not worked. Your Allergist also sends a letter to your primary care or referring doctor so your care stays coordinated.

Do you take my insurance?

Sher Allergy Specialists participates in most insurance plans. Plans change often, so please call our office at 727-397-8557 for current information. Our team will review your eligibility, benefits and anticipated responsibility before your visit.
