Serving Indian Rocks Beach
Allergy & Asthma Care for Indian Rocks Beach
Over the bridge, up Walsingham Road, and you are here. Specialist care for the cough, the wheeze and the congestion that come with living on the Gulf.
Closer than almost anywhere on the beach
Indian Rocks Beach residents are used to a drive for anything specialized. This one is short. Cross the Intracoastal on Walsingham Road, continue east past Walsingham Park, and Seminole Boulevard is right there — the Largo Professional Center at 11200 Seminole Blvd, Suite 310, with parking on site. Neighbors in Indian Shores and Belleair Beach make effectively the same trip.
That proximity matters more for allergy and asthma than for most specialties, because these are conditions managed over time. Scheduled allergy shot appointments, a follow-up spirometry, a quick recheck when a bloom rolls in — all realistic when the office is ten minutes off the island.
Red tide is a respiratory event, not just a beach problem
When a Karenia brevis bloom moves in along the Gulf, the surf breaks the organism apart and the irritants it contains ride the sea spray inland. The result is well documented on this coast: coughing, throat irritation, watery eyes, chest tightness and wheezing — sometimes several blocks from the water, and worst on an onshore breeze.
People with asthma feel it earliest and hardest. If your worst weeks of the year are the weeks the beach smells wrong, that is not a coincidence and it is not something to simply endure. It belongs in your medical record and in your asthma plan.
Get ahead of the bloom, not through it
Asthma makes it hard for air to move in and out of the lungs and can begin at any age. There is no cure yet, but the goal of therapy is to control the disease and prevent its progression — and that means treating the primary cause of airway inflammation, not only the symptoms as they appear.
An airway that is genuinely quiet before a bloom handles one very differently from an airway that has been quietly smoldering since March. The difference between those two situations is measurable, in this office, in about twenty minutes.
Measuring an airway instead of guessing at it
Two tests turn “I think I am doing okay” into something you can act on, and both are done in this office during your visit:
FeNO
A simple breath test that determines the amount of lung inflammation, identifying activity for asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis. It shows whether the airway is actively inflamed even on a day you feel fine.
Spirometry
Lung function testing that measures how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you move it, compared against values predicted as normal for your age, size and sex. It can be repeated after medication to measure the effect and to track progress.
Allergy Skin & Blood Testing
Because a bloom is an irritant on top of whatever you are already allergic to. Identifying the underlying mold, dust mite or pollen allergy is what lowers the baseline. At Sher Allergy Specialists, your allergy skin tests are personally measured and read by a physician or physician assistant, with physician oversight and interpretation, rather than simply recorded by a technician or medical assistant for later review.
Rhinoscopy
For persistent cough, chronic postnasal drip or recurrent sinus trouble, a flexible fiberoptic look at the nasal passages, back of the throat and larynx (voice box) — a far more thorough examination than looking from outside.
Salt air, and what a beach house holds
Red tide comes and goes. Coastal humidity does not. Houses on and behind Gulf Boulevard live with salt air, sea breeze, and a moisture load that runs high twelve months a year — ideal conditions for indoor mold and for dust mites, which love the heat and humidity of Florida and live in carpets, mattresses, pillows, box springs and upholstered furniture.
Mold allergy and dust allergy are both conditions we test for and treat, and this is where environmental management earns its keep. After the specific allergic and irritant triggers are identified, our team recommends an environmental control program for the home; some simple, cost-effective changes can be very helpful in controlling symptoms, and the clinical staff will walk you through how to start.
Eye allergy commonly rides along — red, tearing, watery, itchy eyes triggered by mold, dust mites, pet dander and pollen. It is treated as part of the same picture, not as a separate errand.
Who you will see, and what treatment can look like
A board-certified Allergist/Immunologist is on site for every visit. Dr. Mandel R. Sher is double board certified in Allergy & Immunology and Pediatrics, is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, and serves on the asthma and respiratory committees of the American College and American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
Depending on what testing shows, treatment may include allergy shots — all-natural rather than medication, reducing allergy symptoms in over 85% of patients — the oral immunotherapy pill for dust mite, grass or ragweed allergy, biologic therapy such as Xolair, Nucala or Fasenra for asthma that has not responded well to traditional treatment, Xolair for food allergies, and medical and environmental management built around an actual Gulf-front house.
Questions from Indian Rocks Beach patients
Is red tide dangerous if I have asthma?
The airborne irritants from a bloom are a recognized respiratory trigger and people with asthma tend to react sooner and more strongly. The goal is not to move away from the water — it is to have your asthma verifiably controlled, with lung function and inflammation measured, so a bloom week is manageable rather than frightening.
I cough for weeks after a bloom clears. Why?
An irritated airway can stay reactive well after the exposure ends, and a cough that outlasts its cause deserves a proper evaluation. Chronic cough is treated here as a serious condition, and rhinoscopy plus inflammation testing frequently explains what is keeping it going.
We only live here part of the year. Can you still help?
Yes. We aim to complete testing and interpretation during your evaluation visit so you leave with a diagnosis and a plan, and telemedicine appointments are available for suitable follow-ups from wherever you spend the rest of the year.
Could my house be part of the problem?
Frequently. Coastal humidity supports indoor mold and dust mites year round. Once testing identifies your specific triggers, we recommend an environmental control program — often simple and cost-effective changes rather than a renovation.
How long is the drive from Gulf Boulevard?
A matter of minutes. East over the Intracoastal on Walsingham Road, past Walsingham Park, and south a short way on Seminole Boulevard to 11200 Seminole Blvd #310.
